Hungary clinched first place by defeating Senegal 63-47 in the preliminary qualifying rounds for the Women’s Basketball World Cup, which were held in Kigali over the past week. Murekatete Bella has been named to the tournament’s All-Star team.

The final match took place on Sunday, August 25, at BK Arena, featuring the teams from Group C.

The game was closely contested from the start, with both teams scoring points thanks to Ndioma Kane and Virag Kiss. The first quarter ended with Hungary narrowly leading Senegal 13-12.

In the second quarter, the teams continued to play tightly, with fewer points being scored. By the end of the quarter, Hungary, supported by Virag and Bernadett Hatar, started to build a lead, finishing with 20 points compared to Senegal’s 14.

The first half concluded with Hungary ahead 33-26.

Hungary maintained their strong performance into the third quarter, with Virag and Hatar scoring most of the points and extending their lead to 15 points.

The third quarter ended with Hungary leading Senegal 49-34.

Senegal couldn’t make a comeback in the final quarter and ended up falling further behind.

The game ended with Hungary winning 63-47, earning the sole spot in the final qualifying round for the Women’s Basketball World Cup, scheduled for March 2026.

After the tournament, the All-Tournament team was announced, including Murekatete Bella from the Rwandan National Team, along with Virag Kiss and Reka Lelik from Hungary, Ndioma Kane from Senegal, and Holly Winterburn from Great Britain.

Hungary’s victory means they advance to the final qualifying round.

Cierra Dillard did not make a significant impact during the tournament.

Bella Murekatete was recognized as one of the top players of the tournament.
