Arsenal WFC was on the brink of setting a record by purchasing Keira Walsh as the most expensive player in women’s football history. However, FC Barcelona Femení decided against selling her.

At 27 years old, Keira Walsh still has a year left on her contract with FC Barcelona, but the team is not interested in letting her go.

Spanish media report that Arsenal WFC was prepared to pay over £930,000 for Walsh. With the transfer window for women’s football in England closing on the night of September 13, FC Barcelona would have only had two days to find a replacement if they had decided to sell her, as the window in Spain closes on Monday.

Walsh, who joined FC Barcelona in 2022, has already announced that she won’t renew her contract, meaning she will leave the team at the end of her current deal without any transfer fee.

When she first joined FC Barcelona, Walsh set a record as the most expensive female player at that time, with a transfer fee of £400,000 from Manchester City WFC.

Currently, Zambian player Racheal Kundananji holds the record for the most expensive female player, moving to Bay FC in the U.S. from Real Madrid for £685,000 in February 2024.

Keira Walsh was poised to break records as the world’s most expensive female football player.
